Reconfigurations and the parts nobody makes anymore
A reconfiguration is harder than a relocation, which surprises most people. Moving a cubicle farm and rebuilding it exactly as it was is a known quantity. Taking the same panels and building a different layout means the inventory you own has to actually produce the plan you drew, and frequently it does not.
The usual shortfalls are predictable once you have done this a few times. A denser layout needs more connectors and more end-of-run panels than the old plan used, and those are the pieces that get thrown away first. A new plan with longer runs needs beltline covers and top caps in lengths you may not have. Converting panel-based stations to benching leaves you with panels you no longer need and short of the work surfaces and supports you now do. Powered runs need the right number of power-in whips and raceway sections at the right points, which almost never match the new floor plan.
This is why we count your actual parts inventory before the project rather than during it. Panels by width and height, connectors by type, work surfaces, supports, hardware, and electrical components all get counted against the new drawing, and you get a list of what has to be sourced before move day instead of a crew standing idle while someone calls a dealer.
Sourcing is its own problem on older systems. Discontinued lines, and finishes that were discontinued even on current lines, often mean the gap gets filled from the secondary market, and matching a twelve-year-old fabric is sometimes not possible at all. When that happens it is better to know at planning so you can decide whether to accept a near match, reconfigure around what you have, or put the mismatched stations somewhere they will not be noticed. Finding out on move day removes all three options.
