Receive, inspect, hold, install once

Interior Design Receiving in San Diego

A furnished room almost never arrives at once. Pieces come from a dozen vendors over several weeks, and a fair number arrive by freight carriers who will set a crate at the curb and drive away. We take delivery at our own warehouse, inspect and photograph each piece as it lands, hold it by project, and install the whole room in a single appointment.

The short version

Gorilla Movers runs designer receiving out of our own San Diego warehouse. Your vendors and freight carriers deliver to us instead of to the residence, and we unbox, inspect and photograph every piece, check it against the purchase order and send an itemized receiving report the same day, so damage is caught inside the carrier's claim window rather than on install morning. Product is stored by project and billed by the space it actually occupies, month to month, which makes a construction delay a line item instead of a crisis. When the room is ready everything goes in together, unwrapped in place, assembled and set to your plan, with the crating leaving the same day. $1M/$2M general liability plus a $3M umbrella, certificates of insurance issued same day. Licensed CAL T-192729, USDOT 3801918. Call 619-600-5000.

What designer receiving actually solves

The problem is never the furniture. It is that a single room can involve ten vendors on ten schedules, and most of them ship freight. A freight carrier's job ends at the curb, so somebody has to be there to take delivery, open the crate, confirm it is the right piece in the right finish, and say so in writing. On a job site with no one standing by, that does not happen, and a cracked stone top gets discovered on the morning the room was meant to be finished.

Receiving moves that moment forward by weeks. Every delivery comes to us instead of to the residence. We unbox it, check it against the purchase order, photograph what we find, and tell you the same day. If a piece is wrong or damaged, you are dealing with it while the vendor and the carrier still have to care.

It also keeps a construction site from becoming a warehouse. Product that arrives early is not in the way of the trades, is not being opened by people who did not order it, and is not sitting in a garage absorbing dust.

The receiving report, and why the claim window matters

Freight carriers work to short claim windows. Concealed damage in particular has to be reported quickly, and once that window closes the piece is yours whatever condition it turned up in. That deadline is the single most expensive thing about receiving product at the residence, because nobody opens a crate on the day it lands.

So the report comes first. As each delivery arrives you get an itemized receiving report with photographs: what came, from whom, against which purchase order, and its condition out of the box. Shortages, overages and damage get flagged immediately rather than summarized at the end of the project.

That record is also what makes the install predictable. By the time the room is ready you already know every piece is present, correct and sound, which is a different day from one that begins by opening boxes and hoping.

Storage by project, billed by the space it uses

Gorilla Movers wooden storage vaults stacked inside the San Diego warehouse where designer receiving is held
Project inventory held in our own San Diego warehouse.

Product is stored by project, not thrown into a general pool, so a consolidation is a matter of pulling one client's inventory rather than hunting for it. Storage is billed by the space your project actually occupies, month to month, which means a two-month construction delay is a line item rather than a crisis.

Holding is the normal case, not an exception. Almost every job has a piece that ships early and a piece that ships late, and the point of receiving is that neither one dictates the install date. We hold until the room is genuinely ready.

One install day, and the crating leaves with us

When the project is ready, everything travels together. Floor runners and corner protection go down before anything comes through the door, pieces are unwrapped in the room rather than in the driveway, and furniture is assembled and placed to your plan rather than left boxed in the middle of the floor.

The crating, blankets, foam and cardboard leave with the crew the same day. A finished room with a mountain of packaging in it is not a finished room, and it is not a photograph you can use.

If the reveal is being shot, tell us at the walkthrough. The order things come in changes when a photographer is booked for the afternoon.

Receiving is quoted per project rather than by the hour: a receiving and handling charge per piece or shipment, storage by the space your project occupies month to month, and the install day quoted from the final inventory. Send the purchase order list and we will price it in writing.
FAQ

Designer Receiving questions, answered.

How does designer receiving work?
You route your vendors and freight carriers to our San Diego warehouse instead of to the residence. We take delivery, unbox and inspect each piece, photograph it, check it against the purchase order and send an itemized receiving report. Product is then held by project until the room is ready, at which point it all goes in together on one install day.
Do you inspect for damage before install day?
Yes, at receipt rather than at install. Every piece is opened and photographed as it lands, and shortages, overages and damage are reported the same day. That matters because freight carriers work to short claim windows, especially for concealed damage. Finding a cracked top in week one is a claim; finding it on install morning usually is not.
How is storage billed?
By the space your project actually occupies, month to month, rather than by a fixed unit size. Your inventory is stored by project, so a partial release or a consolidation does not mean searching a general pool.
Can you hold product through a construction delay?
Yes, and that is the normal case rather than the exception. Almost every project has a piece that ships early and a piece that ships late. Holding is what stops either one from dictating the install date.
Are you insured for high-value pieces?
We carry $1M/$2M general liability plus a $3M umbrella, and we issue certificates of insurance, including additional-insured naming, the same day you ask. We are also a licensed and regulated mover, CAL T-192729 and USDOT 3801918, which is not true of every company offering receiving in San Diego.
Do you deliver outside San Diego County?
We receive in San Diego and install throughout San Diego County. Installs beyond the county are quoted case by case, and long distance out of San Diego is handled by our long-distance side. Call 619-600-5000 and we will tell you plainly whether it is a job for us.

Gorilla movers did a fantastic job moving my mother in Oceanside. Raul was incredible. From the moment he arrived, he was very strategic in how he would complete the job. I had doubts with all of the stuff we had but trusted his knowledge and experience and he exceeded our expectations! They take care of your items, asked a lot of questions and consistently checked in on if there was anything else they could help with. Raul, not sure if we could have done this move without you!! Thank you so much and than you Gorilla movers!! -Jackie, Marty, and Liz

What took me at least 8 hours of painstaking work took them less than 2. Makes me wish I used them for the loading AND unloading. Raul and Hazael were so quick and nice and communicative throughout the entire process. Makes things easier on yourself by using them if you need to move at all. It’s well worth it.

Alex and the crew were very professional and took great care of our stuff. We booked on short notice and they were accommodating and communicated throughout the move. They even helped move some of the boxes of stuff from our garage to the appropriate rooms as we had a little extra time.

We used Gorilla Movers 7 years ago and they did an excellent job. So we hired them again for our current move and they worked so hard. This time we were moving our belongings into pods and the perfectly wrapped our furniture for a long move. They also perfectly packed the pods so we could fit all of our belongings. I highly recommend this moving company.
