What counts as a long distance move from San Diego

Ask three moving companies what counts as long distance and you will get three different answers. Here is the practical rule: once a move crosses roughly 100 miles or a state line, it stops behaving like a local job. The crew cannot make a same-day round trip, pricing shifts from the clock to the shipment itself, and the planning window gets longer. A run from San Diego to Temecula is an extended local move. San Diego to Sacramento, Phoenix, or Seattle is genuinely long distance, and it should be quoted and staffed that way.

The regulatory line matters too. Moves that stay inside California are intrastate moves, regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission, and the carrier needs an active CAL-T permit. Ours is CAL T-192729. Cross a state line and the move becomes interstate, governed by federal FMCSA rules, which requires USDOT authority. Ours is USDOT 3801918. Before you hire anyone for a long distance move, verify both numbers. Nearly every hostage-load horror story starts with a company that could not produce them.

The distinction also changes how you pay. Local San Diego moves are billed hourly. Long distance moves are priced as a complete project based on your inventory, the route, access at both ends, and the services you add, which is exactly why the on-site survey covered below is worth 30 minutes of your time.

Interstate highway full of vehicles heading out of San Diego

One dedicated crew, not a van line network

Most national long distance moving runs on the van line model. Your belongings are loaded into a shared trailer with two or three other households, routed through freight terminals, and handled by different crews at different stages. That consolidation keeps prices down on small coast-to-coast shipments, but it comes with a cost: delivery spreads of five to twenty-one days, extra handling at every transfer point, and a driver at your destination you have never met.

Gorilla Movers runs long distance differently. One crew, one truck, your shipment only. The same background-checked, uniformed employees who pack and load your home in San Diego drive the route and set your furniture in the new place. No terminals, no re-stacking in a warehouse, no waiting for a trailer to fill. Fewer touches means fewer chances for damage, and a dedicated truck means a real delivery date instead of a window measured in weeks.

That crew is ours, never day labor hired at a destination parking lot. You get a live-tracking text on move day, a certificate of insurance for any building that requires one, and the same accountability at hour one and mile 1,300. Since 2008 we have completed more than 25,120 moves, and $5 from every one of them goes to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

One honest caveat: if you are moving a studio's worth of boxes to the East Coast, a consolidated shipment can be the cheaper play. For small loads, ask us about our state-to-state mini moves before you commit either way. We would rather point you to the right-sized option than sell you an empty truck.

Popular long distance routes from San Diego

Phoenix: about 355 miles east on I-8. Our most-traveled route. Load one day, deliver the next, and smaller homes often load and deliver the same day.
Scottsdale: same corridor as Phoenix with a short hop north. Popular with retirees and remote workers leaving San Diego housing prices. Transit 1-2 days.
Las Vegas: roughly 330 miles up I-15. Next-day delivery is standard, and same-day is realistic for apartments loaded early. Transit 1-2 days.
Sacramento: about 500 miles north. A common route for state workers and families chasing lower home prices. Transit 1-2 days.
Bay Area: San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland run 460-510 miles. We handle COIs for high-rises on both ends. Transit 1-2 days.
Salt Lake City: around 750 miles through the desert on I-15. Transit 2-3 days depending on season and mountain weather.
Denver: roughly 1,080 miles with real mountain grades, so load engineering matters. Transit 2-4 days.
Portland: about 1,090 miles up I-5. A steady route for families headed to the Pacific Northwest. Transit 2-4 days.
Seattle: approximately 1,255 miles, the longest of our regular West Coast runs. Transit 3-5 days.
Austin: around 1,300 miles east on I-8 and I-10, our busiest Texas destination. Transit 3-5 days.
Dallas-Fort Worth: roughly 1,360 miles. Transit 3-5 days with a firm date set before loading.
Houston: about 1,470 miles, the far end of our Texas corridor. Transit 3-5 days.

Binding quotes, highway-grade packing, and storage between homes

Here is how long distance pricing works with us. A phone or video estimate is a useful starting point, but it is hourly-based and not a guarantee. For a long distance move you want a binding quote, and binding quotes are locked in with a free on-site survey. An estimator walks your home, builds a room-by-room inventory, checks access at both addresses, and hands you a firm project price. Fuel is charged on every long distance move and it is itemized up front in that quote, so the number you approve already includes it. No mystery line items appearing at delivery.

Packing for 350 to 1,500 highway miles is a different discipline than packing for a trip across town. Your shipment will absorb hours of road vibration, desert heat, mountain grades, and hard braking. Our crews pack for that reality: double-walled cartons packed tight with no dead space, paper-wrapped contents, furniture fully blanket-wrapped and banded, and every tier of the load strapped to the truck walls. You can pack yourself, hand us just the kitchen and fragile items, or turn the whole house over to a full packing crew.

Long distance moves rarely line up perfectly. Escrow closes before your new home is ready, a lease starts two weeks late, or you want to house-hunt from a short-term rental. We bridge the gap with storage in San Diego: your shipment stays loaded, wrapped, and inventoried until you call for delivery, whether that is a week or several months. One company holds custody the entire time, so nothing changes hands.

If either end of the move is a condo, high-rise, or managed community, we handle the paperwork. Certificates of insurance for buildings are standard with us, and we coordinate elevator reservations and loading dock windows so move day does not stall in a lobby.

Military PCS moves from San Diego

San Diego is home to one of the largest military communities in the country, from Naval Base San Diego and MCAS Miramar to Camp Pendleton and Naval Air Station North Island. PCS season is a fact of life here, and we have moved hundreds of service members and their families in and out of the county since 2008.

If you are taking the personally procured move route, we make the reimbursement paperwork painless: certified weight tickets, a detailed inventory, and a fully itemized invoice that finance offices accept without a fight. We also understand report dates are not suggestions. When your orders say you check in on the 15th, we build the load and transit schedule backward from that date and put it in writing.

FAQ

Long Distance Movers questions, answered.

How long does a move from San Diego to Phoenix take, and what does it cost?
Most San Diego to Phoenix moves load one day and deliver the next morning, and a studio or small 1-bedroom can often load and deliver the same day. Typical pricing runs $2,000-$3,500 for a studio or 1-bedroom, $3,500-$5,500 for a 2-3 bedroom home, and $5,500-$7,500+ for larger houses. Your exact number comes from a free on-site survey, which locks in a binding quote with fuel itemized up front.
Do you broker or subcontract long distance moves?
No. Your move stays with Gorilla Movers from door to door. The same background-checked, uniformed employees who load in San Diego drive the truck and unload at your destination. We never hand your shipment to a partner carrier, a freight terminal, or day labor hired at the other end, which is where most long distance damage and delay stories start.
Will I get an actual delivery date?
Yes. Because your shipment rides on a dedicated truck instead of waiting for a consolidated trailer to fill, we commit to a specific delivery date before loading, not a 5-to-21-day spread. You also get a live-tracking text on move day so you know where the crew is without calling the office.
Do you handle moves into San Diego too?
Absolutely. Our trucks run both directions, so we regularly move families from Phoenix, Las Vegas, the Bay Area, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest into San Diego County. If your dates are flexible, ask about return-trip scheduling: pairing your move with a truck already headed home can sometimes trim the price.
What insurance or valuation coverage is included?
Every interstate move includes released-value coverage of 60 cents per pound per article at no extra charge, the federal baseline. During your free survey we will walk through full-value protection options so high-value items are covered the way you want. Certificates of insurance for buildings and HOAs are standard on every move.
Can you move my car too?
Vehicles do not travel inside a furniture truck, but we coordinate car shipping alongside your household move so both arrive on a schedule that works. Many families drive one car on the route and ship the second. See our San Diego car transportation service for details and pricing.
Can you store my belongings between homes?
Yes. If escrow, a lease start, or a house hunt leaves a gap between move-out and move-in, we hold your shipment in storage in San Diego, wrapped and inventoried, then deliver when you are ready. One company keeps custody the whole time, whether the gap is a week or six months.
Do you offer packing services for long distance moves?
Yes, and for highway miles we recommend at least partial packing. Choose full packing, a fragile-only package for the kitchen, art, and electronics, or pack yourself with our box delivery. Long distance cartons are packed tight for road vibration, not just for carrying, and materials are itemized in your quote.
How far in advance should I book a long distance move?
For Arizona and Nevada routes, 3-4 weeks is usually comfortable. For Texas, Colorado, and the Pacific Northwest, plan on 4-6 weeks, and add lead time in summer and at month-end when demand peaks. Booking the free on-site survey early locks your binding quote and your dates at the same time.
