San Diego local movers who know every neighborhood

Gorilla Movers has completed more than 25,120 moves across San Diego County since 2008, every one of them handled by our own background-checked, uniformed employees. We never send day labor, and it shows in the record: 4.8 stars across 326 Google reviews, more than 760 reviews combined across platforms, a BBB A+ rating, and full state and federal licensing (CAL T-192729, USDOT 3801918).

Local experience shows up in how we plan your move, too. A crew headed to La Jolla knows the narrow streets off Torrey Pines Road mean claiming parking early or bringing the right size truck. North Park means alley-access garages behind Craftsman homes and permit-only blocks near 30th Street. Poway means long canyon driveways and split-level floor plans. UTC apartment complexes almost always require an elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance, which we provide as standard. Chula Vista's Otay Ranch and Eastlake communities have HOA rules about where a truck can stage, and downtown high-rises in East Village and the Marina District run on strict loading dock schedules that we book around.

On an hourly move, that knowledge is money. A crew that guesses at parking, elevators, and routes burns your time. A crew that has moved that exact street before does not.

How hourly rates work for local moves in San Diego

Local moves in California are billed by the hour, so any company promising an exact flat price over the phone without seeing your home is guessing. Your rate is set by crew size and truck count, and the clock covers protecting your home, loading, driving, and unloading. Most studios and one-bedrooms run best with two movers, two-bedroom homes with three, and larger houses with four or five. A bigger crew costs more per hour but finishes faster, and we will recommend the combination that produces the lowest total, not the biggest ticket.

You will also see a line called double drive time on every legitimate San Diego quote. California's Public Utilities Commission requires licensed movers to charge double the drive time between your old address and your new one. In exchange, you are never billed for the crew's travel from the warehouse to your home or back. If the drive from your North Park apartment to your new place in Clairemont takes 15 minutes, you pay for 30 minutes of drive time, and the trip from our Miramar facility costs you nothing. Every licensed California mover must bill this way, so treat a company that skips it as a red flag, not a discount.

Fuel is charged and itemized up front on your quote, never buried in the fine print, and we do not invent stair fees or long-carry fees after the fact. One more thing worth knowing: hourly quotes are careful estimates, not guarantees. If you want a locked number, binding quotes are locked in with a free on-site survey, where an estimator walks your home and commits to a price in writing.

What's included with every San Diego local move

A dedicated crew of background-checked, uniformed Gorilla Movers employees, never day labor or temps
A fully equipped moving truck, with fuel itemized on your quote up front
Furniture blankets, shrink wrap, and mattress bags on everything we load
Disassembly and reassembly of beds, dining tables, and standard furniture
Floor runners and door jamb protection at both addresses
Free use of wardrobe boxes on local moves, so hanging clothes go closet to closet
Dollies, straps, and tools, with nothing to rent separately
A live-tracking text on move day so you can watch your crew's ETA in real time
Certificates of insurance for buildings and HOAs, standard and at no extra charge
Basic valuation protection included, with upgraded coverage available
$5 from every move donated to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

What move day looks like

Your crew lead calls before arrival, and you get a live-tracking text so you are not staring out the window waiting on a vague arrival window. First step on site is a walkthrough: you point out priority items, anything fragile, and anything staying behind. The crew then protects floors and doorways, wraps furniture in blankets and shrink wrap, and loads the truck in a deliberate order so heavy pieces anchor the load and boxes ride secure.

At the new place, movers set every box and piece of furniture in the room you name, not in a pile by the front door. Beds and tables we took apart get reassembled, and the crew lead does a final walkthrough with you before presenting an itemized bill showing hours worked, drive time, and fuel. No surprises, because everything on that invoice was explained when you booked.

High-rises, HOAs, and San Diego parking

Building requirements stall more San Diego moves than traffic does. Most downtown high-rises, UTC and Mission Valley complexes, and managed HOAs require a certificate of insurance before a crew can touch the elevator. We issue COIs as standard, usually within a business day, and we will coordinate directly with your property manager on elevator reservations and dock times so your move does not stall in the lobby.

Parking gets its own plan. Downtown and Bankers Hill often call for a reserved loading zone, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach mean tight alleys where truck position is everything, and older Golden Hill and South Park blocks can require a longer carry that we account for in your estimate, not spring on you afterward. Tell us the address and we will tell you the plan.

FAQ

Local Moving questions, answered.

How much do movers cost in San Diego?
Local moves are billed hourly, so cost depends on crew size and hours worked. Typical totals run $400-650 for a studio, $450-750 for a one-bedroom, $800-1,400 for a two-bedroom, $1,400-2,100 for a three-bedroom, and $1,900-2,800 for larger homes, with fuel itemized up front. Phone quotes are hourly estimates. If you want a guaranteed number, binding quotes are locked in with a free on-site survey.
What is double drive time and why am I being charged for it?
It is a California CPUC rule, not a company fee. Licensed movers must charge double the drive time between your old and new address, and in return you are never billed for the crew's travel to or from the warehouse. A 15-minute drive bills as 30 minutes. Every licensed California mover charges this way, so a quote without it usually means an unlicensed operator.
How many movers do I need?
Two movers handle most studios and one-bedrooms efficiently. Three is the sweet spot for two-bedroom homes, and four or five makes sense for three-bedroom and larger houses. A bigger crew costs more per hour but cuts total hours, so we quote the combination that produces the lowest overall price for your specific home, stairs, and drive.
Should I tip my movers, and how much?
Tips are never required or expected, but crews certainly appreciate them after a job well done. Most San Diego customers who tip give $20-40 per mover for a typical local move, more for long days or lots of stairs. Cold drinks or lunch on a hot day also go a long way.
How far in advance should I book San Diego movers?
One to two weeks works for most mid-month, mid-week dates. For the last weekend of the month, or any summer Saturday, book three to four weeks out because those dates sell out across the whole city. That said, call us for last-minute moves too, we can often fit a crew in within a day or two.
My building requires a COI. Can you handle that?
Yes, certificates of insurance are standard with every Gorilla Movers job at no extra charge. Send us your property manager's contact info and the building's requirements, and we typically issue the COI within one business day. We will also remind you to reserve the elevator, which most UTC, downtown, and Mission Valley buildings require.
Any advice for moving day with kids or pets?
Set up one closed-off room or arrange a sitter for the day, because doors stay open constantly while crews carry. Pack a first-night box with snacks, chargers, medications, and favorite toys so you are not digging through boxes at 8 pm. Pets do best boarded or with a friend, and cats especially should be secured before the crew arrives.
Is there anything movers can't take?
By law we cannot transport hazardous materials: propane tanks, gasoline, paint, aerosols, ammunition, and pool chemicals all need to move with you or be disposed of. We also recommend you personally carry cash, jewelry, passports, and important documents, and plan to drive your plants and perishables yourself on a local move.
How long does a local move in San Diego take?
Most one-bedroom moves finish in three to four hours, two-bedrooms in four to six, and full houses in six to ten depending on crew size, stairs, and drive distance. Being fully packed before the crew arrives is the single biggest factor in finishing on the low end of the estimate.

Gorilla movers did a fantastic job moving my mother in Oceanside. Raul was incredible. From the moment he arrived, he was very strategic in how he would complete the job. I had doubts with all of the stuff we had but trusted his knowledge and experience and he exceeded our expectations! They take care of your items, asked a lot of questions and consistently checked in on if there was anything else they could help with. Raul, not sure if we could have done this move without you!! Thank you so much and than you Gorilla movers!! -Jackie, Marty, and Liz

I recently moved from downtown San Diego to Rancho Bernardo with Gorilla Movers, and the experience was excellent from start to finish. The team arrived on time, came fully prepared, and handled everything with a high level of professionalism. Moving out of downtown can be tricky with traffic and building restrictions, but they managed everything smoothly without any issues. They were very careful with my furniture, wrapping and protecting everything properly, and nothing was damaged during the move. What I appreciated most was their efficiency. They worked quickly but never rushed or cut corners. Communication was clear the entire time, and the pricing was fair with no surprises. Overall, it was a stress free move, and I would definitely recommend Gorilla Movers to anyone looking for a reliable and professional team.
