Same-Building Movers in San Diego

Some moves never touch a truck. Unit to unit, floor to floor, suite to suite, or everything out of a space and back in once the new floor goes down. We bring the same crew, the same floor protection and the same certificate of insurance your building is going to ask for.

The short version

Yes, Gorilla Movers takes jobs that never leave the property. Apartment unit to unit, floor to floor in a high rise, building A to building C in the same complex, office suite to suite, and furniture carried out of a space and put back after flooring, paint or construction. You get the same crew, the same floor protection, the same disassembly and reassembly, and a certificate of insurance naming your building or association. The one thing a same-building move does not involve is a drive between two addresses, so the double drive time that California's Maximum Rate Tariff requires on a normal move does not apply. Tell us the floors, the elevator situation and whether the furniture needs to come back, and we will size the crew. Call 619-600-5000.

The five same-building moves we get called for

Unit to unit in one building. Apartment 401 to apartment 812, usually a lease change or an upgrade inside the same address. Nothing goes outside, so the whole job is hallways, elevators and doorways.

Building to building in one complex. Larger San Diego communities spread across several buildings and a shared garage. The furniture may travel farther than it would on a short across-town move, just without a highway in the middle.

Floor to floor in a condo or high rise. These live or die on the freight elevator. The building usually wants a reservation, a certificate of insurance and elevator padding before a crew sets foot in the lobby.

Office suite to suite. Suite 200 to suite 450, a department shuffle, or a conference room that has to become an engineering bay. Desks, monitors, files and seating, generally after hours or over a weekend so nobody loses a work day.

Furniture out and back for construction. Flooring, carpet, paint, water damage repair or a reconfiguration. Everything comes out of the space, waits where you want it, and goes back once the trade is finished. One job, two visits.

A same-building move is not automatically an easy move

People assume that skipping the truck makes the job trivial. You eliminated the drive. You did not eliminate the labor.

On an ordinary move a dresser gets carried maybe twenty feet to the truck and twenty feet off it. Moving that same dresser three hundred feet down a corridor, around two corners and through a freight elevator can be more carrying, not less, and the elevator only holds so much per trip.

The honest version is this: the parts of a move that take time are stairs, long carries, elevator waits, tight turns, disassembly and protecting finished surfaces. A same-building move removes exactly one of the variables and sometimes increases the rest. What it reliably saves you is drive time, and under California's Maximum Rate Tariff that is the piece movers must bill at double on a normal address-to-address move.

Unit to unit transfers for property managers

Sometimes the resident is not moving out, they are just moving. A unit needs renovation, there is water damage to remediate, an accessibility accommodation has to be met, or someone is transferring to a different unit in the portfolio.

That is a different job from a turnover. The resident stays on site, their belongings stay in your building, and the work has to happen without turning the hallway into a staging area for three days.

We already keep a certificate of insurance on file for buildings across San Diego County, naming the management company, the ownership entity or the association as additional insured. If we are already your turnover and cleanout vendor, a unit transfer is the same phone call with a different address line.

Furniture out and back for flooring, paint and construction

This is the one most movers will not quote properly, because it is two visits with a gap in the middle and the gap is controlled by somebody else's trade schedule.

We move the contents out of the space, stage them where you want them (an empty suite, a conference room, a garage bay, or our warehouse if the gap is long), and come back to put everything where it was. Workstations and shelving come apart and go back together.

Offices, medical suites, restaurants and common areas all run this play. The thing that makes it work is a realistic return date, so tell us what the contractor promised and what you actually expect.

What your building will want before we start

Most San Diego high rises, HOAs and office parks ask for the same short list: a certificate of insurance with specific additional insured wording, a reserved service elevator window, an approved move-in and move-out time range, and protection on floors, walls and elevator interiors.

Send us the building's requirements with your request and we will handle the paperwork directly with management. We issue certificates the same day a manager asks, and we have moved inside enough San Diego buildings to know what most of them are going to require before they say it.

Licensed and insured for all of it: CAL T-192729, USDOT 3801918, with $1M/$2M liability and a $3M umbrella.

How it works

Four steps, no highway in the middle.

1

Tell us the floors

Starting unit or suite, destination, elevator or stairs, and whether the furniture has to come back later.

2

We handle the building

Certificate of insurance with your management company's wording, and we work to the service elevator window you were given.

3

Protect, carry, place

Floor, wall and elevator protection goes down first. Furniture comes apart, travels the hallway, and goes back together.

4

Back where it belongs

Everything placed and reassembled. On a construction job we return once the trade is finished and put the room back.

FAQ

Same-Building Moves questions, answered.

Do you take moves that never leave the building?
Yes. Unit to unit, floor to floor, suite to suite, and building to building inside one complex are all normal work for us. There is no minimum requirement that the job involve a drive.
Is a same-building move cheaper than a regular move?
It removes the drive between two addresses, and with it the double drive time that California's Maximum Rate Tariff requires movers to bill on an address-to-address move. Everything else still applies: crew size, hours, stairs, elevator waits and disassembly. Long hallway carries can take longer than a short drive across town, so ask for a written quote rather than assuming it is half price.
Can you reserve the freight elevator for us?
The reservation generally has to come from the resident or the tenant, since buildings book it against your unit or suite. Tell us the window you were given and we will build the crew and the schedule around it.
Can you provide a certificate of insurance for my building or HOA?
Yes, that is routine. Send the exact additional insured wording your building requires and we typically issue the certificate the same day. Buildings across San Diego already have our COIs on file.
Can you move our furniture out and then bring it back after new flooring?
Yes. We move the contents out, stage them wherever you want them, and return to put everything back once the trade is finished. Workstations and shelving are disassembled and reassembled. Give us the contractor's realistic return date when you book.
Can you move a resident from one unit to another for us?
Yes. Resident transfers for renovation, water damage, accessibility accommodations and unit upgrades are regular work for the property managers we already serve across San Diego County.
Can an office move happen after hours or on a weekend?
That is usually how internal office moves work, so nobody loses a work day and the building's move window is respected. Tell us the hours your building allows and we will schedule inside them.
How do you quote a move inside one building?
On crew size and the time the job actually takes, like any hourly move. The details that change the number are floors, elevator versus stairs, carry distance, how much comes apart and whether the furniture has to come back later. Call 619-600-5000 and we will put it in writing.

“Gorilla movers did a fantastic job moving my mother in Oceanside. Raul was incredible. From the moment he arrived, he was very strategic in how he would complete the job. I had doubts with all of the stuff we had but trusted his knowledge and experience and he exceeded our expectations! They take care of your items, asked a lot of questions and consistently checked in on if there was anything else they could help with. Raul, not sure if we could have done this move without you!! Thank you so much and than you Gorilla movers!! -Jackie, Marty, and Liz”
