North and South
Fairbanks Ranch is not one gate, it is two. The community runs across about five square miles either side of San Dieguito Road, which was itself private once, and the north and south sections clear separately. Telling us which side you are on is the difference between a crew arriving at your gate and a crew arriving at the other one.
The guardhouse, not the gate code
Entry is staffed around the clock rather than run off a keypad, so access is a list, not a code. Crew names, vehicle descriptions and our certificate of insurance go across before move day. A guard who is expecting you costs nothing; a guard who is not can cost an hour off the front of the job.
The Covenant, next door
The original Rancho Santa Fe sits right alongside and works the opposite way: no gate at all, but private Association roads, an Art Jury, and narrow lanes with nearly sixty miles of riding trails crossing them. Moves between here and the Covenant are common, and the two ends of that job need completely different planning.
The Bridges and The Crosby
Both guard-gated golf communities a few minutes away, The Bridges running roughly 240 homes on half-acre to two-acre lots. Same drill as here, names ahead of time, but newer construction and purpose-built motor courts usually mean the full truck gets closer to the door.
Del Mar Country Club and Cielo
Gated too, with Cielo sitting high enough that the approach is switchbacks and hairpins before anyone touches a box. Club communities often run vendor hours, so we book the window instead of negotiating one at the gate.
Where the name came from
The place is named for Douglas Fairbanks, who kept a ranch out here with Mary Pickford between films. The country club that carries the name is a separate private club, and its course hosted the 1984 Olympic equestrian endurance event. None of that changes how a move runs, but it is the reason the horse trails, the lake and the equestrian center are laid out the way they are, and why so many carries here start a long way from the curb.
