Pianos and safes: weight is a technique problem

A piano is not heavy furniture, it is a calibrated instrument with a fragile case around cast iron. We move pianos on boards and skids with the legs and lyre removed when appropriate, pad every contact point, and staff the stairs with enough crew to control the descent instead of surviving it.

Safes are a route-planning exercise. Before the crew arrives we confirm the manufacturer weight, measure doorways and stair turns, and protect floors along the entire path. The right dolly, the right crew size, and a slow pace beat brute force every time, which is part of why our 289 Google reviews average 4.8 stars.

Custom crating for art and antiques

For canvases, glass, marble, and gilt frames we build wood crates to the piece, with foam, corner protection, and surface wrap chosen for the material. Not everything needs a full crate: some pieces travel better in padded art boxes or soft crates, and we will tell you which saves money without adding risk.

Antiques get photographed and condition-noted before wrapping, so everyone starts from the same record. If a piece is headed into storage or across the country, we crate for the whole journey, not just the first truck ride.

One item or a whole household in San Diego

You do not need to book a full move to get specialty handling. Single-item piano, safe, and art moves are routine for us, and when specialty items are part of a larger move we fold the equipment and crew into the same day. Certificates of insurance for buildings are standard, and our crews are background-checked employees, never day labor.

FAQ

Specialty Items questions, answered.

Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes. Stairs change the crew size and equipment, not the answer. Tell us the piano type and describe the staircase when you call, and we will send the right number of movers with boards and ramps suited to the turn.
How heavy a safe can you move?
It depends on access as much as weight. We confirm the manufacturer weight and walk the route during the quote, then match crew and equipment to the job. If a safe exceeds what we can rig safely, we say so instead of improvising.
Does my painting really need a crate?
Not always. High-value, glass-faced, or fragile-frame pieces usually justify a custom crate, while sturdier framed work often travels safely in padded art boxes. We recommend crating only where it genuinely lowers risk.
Do you disassemble gym equipment?
Yes. We break down and reassemble most machines, photograph the hardware as we go, and bag the bolts so reassembly is exact. Cable machines and squat racks are far safer moved in pieces than muscled through doorways whole.
Will you move just one item?
Yes. Single-item specialty moves across San Diego County are a normal part of our week, whether it is a piano across town or a safe from a garage to a second-floor office.
How are specialty items covered?
We document condition together before wrapping, and we explain valuation and coverage options during your quote so you can choose the protection level that fits the piece before move day, not after.
