South Park's charm is that nothing got widened. The Craftsman and bungalow blocks around the 30th Street and Fern Street corridors look much as they did a century ago, which means narrow streets, mature trees, small driveways, and curb space shared with a very walkable commercial strip. Getting a 26-foot truck close to a South Park front door is a planning exercise, and we do the planning before the clock starts.
The neighborhood edges matter too. West, the blocks run up against Balboa Park's golf course; east, they drop into Switzer Canyon, where a handful of streets narrow to nearly one lane. The housing is overwhelmingly single-family and small multi-unit, heavy old furniture, narrow original doorways, and porches with awkward step-downs are the daily reality here.
