Small houses, big hills, first keys.
Last spring we moved a couple out of a two-bedroom apartment near the Massachusetts Avenue trolley stop and into their first house, a 1948 bungalow on a hill street east of Broadway. The whole job took four hours. They'd been quoted a full day by a company that never asked what they actually owned. That move is Lemon Grove in miniature: modest square footage, a steep driveway the truck couldn't use, and people stretching to buy in one of the last genuinely affordable pockets this close to downtown San Diego.
The housing here skews older and smaller. Postwar bungalows with single-car garages, low doorways, and hallways framed for 1940s furniture. Lots are compact, driveways are narrow, and plenty of streets climb hard once you get away from the flat commercial stretch along Broadway and Lemon Grove Avenue, past the giant lemon.
