Loading that survives the freeway

Rental trucks and containers: what changes about the load
People ask which truck or container to rent, and the honest answer is that the rental company's room-count guide is optimistic and the size you need depends more on what you own than on how many bedrooms you have. A sparsely furnished three-bedroom can fit in less than a crowded one-bedroom with a garage and a workshop in it. The expensive mistake is renting too small, because then you are making a second trip or leaving things behind on a deadline. What matters more for us is the kind of container, because each one loads differently. A rental truck from U-Haul, Penske, or Budget is loaded for a single drive and can be tiered against the walls with the heavy items low and over the axles. A portable container from PODS, U-Box, or 1-800-PACK-RAT is a different problem: it gets lifted, tilted, and set down by a delivery truck before it ever rides a highway, so it has to be packed wall-tight and strapped in layers that cannot shift when the whole box moves at an angle. A freight trailer load for U-Pack has to be built as a solid, self-supporting wall with a bulkhead, because your goods share a trailer with other freight and anything loose becomes everyone's problem.
Height is the part DIY movers underuse. Rental trucks and containers are tall, and most people stop stacking at shoulder height and then run out of floor. Building full-height tiers with the weight carried on furniture and sturdy boxes rather than on fragile ones is where the extra capacity comes from, and it is also what keeps a load from collapsing into itself somewhere around Barstow.

How we load so nothing shifts
A load that survives the freeway is built in deliberate vertical tiers from the front wall backward, each one tight to the last and strapped off before the next begins. Appliances, dressers, and the heaviest case goods go in first, low and over the axles, which keeps the vehicle balanced and keeps the mass away from the door where it would come loose first.
Furniture gets blanket-wrapped before it goes in rather than having blankets tucked around it afterward. Mattresses travel on edge against a wall where they act as padding instead of taking up floor. Mirrors, glass tops, and artwork go flat against a tiered face, never standing loose in a gap. Sofas go on end when the shape allows it, which frees a surprising amount of floor. Table legs come off and travel strapped to the tabletop with their hardware bagged and taped to the same piece, because the screws are what go missing, not the table.
Every tier gets strapped to the truck's rails. Loose fill goes into the gaps so nothing has room to build momentum, and a final strap closes the last tier so the load does not lean into the door when you open it. Then we show you the load before we leave, so you know what you are driving and what to expect when that door rolls up at the other end.
