A data center move is a logistics project, not a furniture move

Moving a data center is not moving a room full of equipment. It is decommissioning live infrastructure, tracking every asset by serial number, protecting drives that hold your business, and bringing it all back online in an order that lets systems verify before the next one depends on them. Done casually, a rack shows up bent, a drive walks off, or a cutover that was supposed to take four hours takes the whole weekend. Gorilla Movers has moved San Diego server rooms and data centers since 2008, and we plan each one as a project with a runbook, not a truck and a dolly.

The work starts long before move day. We audit the room, photograph and label every cable, build an asset inventory down to the rack unit, and sit down with your IT team or MSP to agree on the sequence: what powers down first, what travels together, what has to be verified before anything else is racked. The plan is the product. The lift is the easy part once the plan is right.

How we run a San Diego data center relocation

Every move follows the same phased spine: inventory and label, coordinated shutdown, decommission and cable-out, protected transport, rack-and-stack at the destination, reconnect, and verification against the pre-move inventory. Nothing is racked at the new site until it is accounted for on the list that left the old one. That reconciliation is what turns a nerve-wracking night into a boring one.

We work to your window, not ours. Most cutovers happen after hours or over a weekend so production traffic never sees the move, and we coordinate the timeline with your carriers, hardware vendors, and colocation provider so the cage, power, and cross-connects are ready the moment the racks arrive.

Protecting the hardware in transit

Servers, storage arrays, and network gear ride in padded, air-ride transport, secured upright and shock-isolated so nothing arrives reseated or out of tolerance. Racks move on the right equipment for their weight, and populated racks are handled with a plan for their center of gravity, not muscled. Drives and any media holding sensitive data travel under documented chain of custody, logged out at the source and reconciled in at the destination.

Everything is done by our own background-checked, uniformed employees. We do not staff a data center move with weekend day labor, because the whole point is that the people touching six- and seven-figure infrastructure are accountable and trained.

Coordinating the cutover window

The move runs on a runbook: a step-by-step sequence with owners, checkpoints, and a rollback for each phase. We hold the physical timeline while your team owns the logical cutover, and the two stay in lockstep so hardware is racked, powered, and cabled exactly when your engineers are ready to bring services up. If a step slips, the runbook tells everyone what waits and what proceeds.

For migrations that span two live sites, we can move in stages, standing up capacity at the destination and draining the source, so there is never a moment where everything is in a truck at once.

Who we move

We handle on-premise server rooms, colocation and cage moves, MSP and hosting relocations, and offices whose IT footprint has outgrown a closet. Whether it is two racks or a full facility, the discipline is the same, only the scale changes.

A smaller job, moving a single server, a handful of switches, or an office IT closet as part of a larger office move, is often better served by our server and IT relocation page. We will point you to the right level of service instead of over-scoping the work.

How it works

Four phases to open on time.

1

2

Pre-move planning

A named project manager coordinates schedules, building COIs, elevator reservations, and IT cutover.

3

Move management

After-hours or weekend execution by our own uniformed crews, live-tracked station by station.

4

Post-move support

Reconfiguration, punch-list walkthrough, and debris removal, so Monday opens on time.

FAQ

Data Center Relocation questions, answered.

How much downtime does a data center move require?
For most moves, the goal is zero production downtime, with the physical relocation happening inside a planned maintenance window, usually after hours or over a weekend. The exact window depends on rack count, cabling, and your verification steps, which we map out together in the runbook before move day so there are no surprises.
Do you disconnect and reconnect the equipment, or just move it?
We handle the physical decommission, cabling-out, transport, rack-and-stack, and reconnect. Your IT team or MSP owns the logical side, powering systems down cleanly and bringing services back up, and we sequence the physical work to match their cutover so hardware is racked and cabled exactly when they need it.
How do you protect drives and sensitive data during the move?
Drives and any media holding sensitive data move under documented chain of custody: logged out at the source, tracked in transit, and reconciled item by item at the destination. Racks and equipment ride in padded, air-ride transport, and every asset is verified against the pre-move inventory before it is racked at the new site.
Can you move us in stages between two live sites?
Yes. For migrations where both sites are live, we can phase the move, standing up capacity at the destination while draining the source, so there is never a point where all of your infrastructure is in transit at once. This is the safest approach for facilities that cannot take a hard cutover.
Do you work after hours and weekends?
Almost always. Data center and server room moves are scheduled around your maintenance window, which is typically nights or weekends, so production traffic never overlaps the physical move. We coordinate that timing with your vendors and colocation provider in advance.
Are you insured for high-value IT equipment?
Yes. We carry commercial liability and cargo coverage, and we provide certificates of insurance for your building, colocation provider, or landlord ahead of the move. For high-value infrastructure we will walk through coverage and valuation with you during planning.
How is this different from your server relocation service?
Server relocation covers moving servers, switches, and a small IT footprint, often as part of an office move. Data center relocation is the facility-scale version: full rooms and cages, rack-and-stack, structured cabling, and a phased cutover with a formal runbook. If you are not sure which fits, call and we will scope it honestly.

Gorilla movers did a fantastic job moving my mother in Oceanside. Raul was incredible. From the moment he arrived, he was very strategic in how he would complete the job. I had doubts with all of the stuff we had but trusted his knowledge and experience and he exceeded our expectations! They take care of your items, asked a lot of questions and consistently checked in on if there was anything else they could help with. Raul, not sure if we could have done this move without you!! Thank you so much and than you Gorilla movers!! -Jackie, Marty, and Liz

I recently moved from downtown San Diego to Rancho Bernardo with Gorilla Movers, and the experience was excellent from start to finish. The team arrived on time, came fully prepared, and handled everything with a high level of professionalism. Moving out of downtown can be tricky with traffic and building restrictions, but they managed everything smoothly without any issues. They were very careful with my furniture, wrapping and protecting everything properly, and nothing was damaged during the move. What I appreciated most was their efficiency. They worked quickly but never rushed or cut corners. Communication was clear the entire time, and the pricing was fair with no surprises. Overall, it was a stress free move, and I would definitely recommend Gorilla Movers to anyone looking for a reliable and professional team.

What took me at least 8 hours of painstaking work took them less than 2. Makes me wish I used them for the loading AND unloading. Raul and Hazael were so quick and nice and communicative throughout the entire process. Makes things easier on yourself by using them if you need to move at all. It’s well worth it.
