The short version

Gorilla Movers moves households from San Diego to Tucson, about 411 miles and six to seven hours on I-8 and I-10. The route turns south at Casa Grande and misses Phoenix entirely. Most moves load one day and deliver the next morning with a dedicated crew at both ends, or as a consolidated shipment if a delivery window suits you better than a fixed date, which costs less. Binding written quotes, and storage in San Diego if your Arizona dates slip. August is the tight month because University of Arizona leases turn over then. Call 619-600-5000.

The San Diego to Tucson timeline

Most moves load in San Diego on day one and deliver in Tucson, Oro Valley, Marana, Vail, Sahuarita or the Catalina Foothills the next morning. A studio or small 1-bedroom can sometimes load early and still make it the same evening. A consolidated shipment on the same route quotes a window instead of a date, usually five days to three weeks, because the trailer is shared and your load waits on other households. It also costs less, which on a small move is often the better trade.

A Gorilla Movers box truck pulled over at the Welcome to Arizona state line sign on Interstate 8
Crossing into Arizona on I-8, the first half of the Tucson run.

The drive is long but simple: I-8 east through El Centro and Yuma, past Gila Bend where the Phoenix traffic peels north on AZ-85, then south on I-10 at Casa Grande. Because it misses Phoenix entirely, there is no metro traffic to plan around, and delivery times hold up better than they do on routes that thread the Valley.

Crossing the California-Arizona line makes this a federally regulated interstate move, so the mover needs active USDOT authority. Ours is USDOT 3801918, and you can verify it before you hire anyone. A company that advertises interstate work without its own authority hands your shipment to somebody else the moment it leaves California.

What a San Diego to Tucson move costs

Typical pricing runs $2,000-$3,500 for a studio or 1-bedroom, $3,500-$5,500 for a 2-3 bedroom home, and $5,500-$7,500+ for larger houses, dedicated truck, one crew, fuel itemized. Interstate pricing is built from your inventory rather than the clock, so the free on-site survey is where your number gets locked as a binding quote.

Two traps show up on every Arizona corridor. The first is a cheap phone estimate that grows on move day. The second is a broker who sells your move to whoever bids lowest, which is how a shipment ends up on a truck nobody told you about. A binding survey quote from a carrier with verifiable CAL-T and USDOT numbers rules out both.

Landing in Tucson

Tucson sits at about 2,400 feet, which makes its summer a few degrees kinder than Phoenix, but June through August still runs past 100 degrees. Those deliveries get planned for the early morning. From July into September the monsoon brings afternoon storms and blowing dust, which is another reason to have the truck unloaded before noon.

August is the tight month. University of Arizona leases turn over and the good delivery slots go early, so book further ahead than you would the rest of the year. Most Tucson neighborhoods take a truck at the curb without a permit. The exceptions are the gated foothills communities, which want a gate code, and the downtown and campus high-rises, which book a freight elevator and ask for a certificate of insurance. We issue COIs the same day.

If your Arizona closing or lease start slips, your load waits in our San Diego warehouse, padded and inventoried, until the day you want it. The same crew then finishes the delivery.

No. It runs I-8 east through El Centro and Yuma, then turns south onto I-10 at Casa Grande, which misses the Phoenix metro completely. That is one reason delivery times on this route are easy to hold.

August, when University of Arizona leases turn over and delivery slots fill early. July through September also brings the monsoon, so afternoon storms and dust are worth planning around. Book earlier than you would the rest of the year.

Gorilla movers did a fantastic job moving my mother in Oceanside. Raul was incredible. From the moment he arrived, he was very strategic in how he would complete the job. I had doubts with all of the stuff we had but trusted his knowledge and experience and he exceeded our expectations! They take care of your items, asked a lot of questions and consistently checked in on if there was anything else they could help with. Raul, not sure if we could have done this move without you!! Thank you so much and than you Gorilla movers!! -Jackie, Marty, and Liz

What took me at least 8 hours of painstaking work took them less than 2. Makes me wish I used them for the loading AND unloading. Raul and Hazael were so quick and nice and communicative throughout the entire process. Makes things easier on yourself by using them if you need to move at all. It’s well worth it.

Alex and the crew were very professional and took great care of our stuff. We booked on short notice and they were accommodating and communicated throughout the move. They even helped move some of the boxes of stuff from our garage to the appropriate rooms as we had a little extra time.

We used Gorilla Movers 7 years ago and they did an excellent job. So we hired them again for our current move and they worked so hard. This time we were moving our belongings into pods and the perfectly wrapped our furniture for a long move. They also perfectly packed the pods so we could fit all of our belongings. I highly recommend this moving company.
