The First-Apartment Checklist

First moves are small in cubic feet and big in unknowns. This is the checklist for the stuff nobody tells you — deposits, photos, elevator rules, and why September in UTC is chaos.

The short answer

Photograph everything the day you get keys (that's your deposit insurance), find out if your building needs a COI before your movers arrive, and if you're moving near UCSD, avoid the mid-September turnover crush — book two weeks ahead or pick a different week.

Before you sign

  • Ask the leasing office: move-in hours, elevator rules, where a truck or van can park
  • Confirm what the deposit covers and how move-out charges are calculated
  • Check which utilities are yours to open — SDG&E takes a few days at peak times

The week you get keys

  • Photograph every wall, floor, and appliance BEFORE anything moves in — timestamped
  • File the condition report even if everything looks fine
  • Measure the door, hallway, and elevator before buying the couch
  • Set up renter's insurance — many San Diego buildings require proof at move-in

The move itself

  • Small load? Our single-item and small-move crews exist for exactly this — cheaper than roping in three friends and a rented truck
  • Moving into a managed community: send the COI requirements ahead (free, one business day)
  • College areas (UTC, Nobel Drive): book early for quarter turnovers, or aim for mid-month
  • Keep documents, chargers, meds, and the lease in a bag that stays with you

Quick answers

Is hiring movers worth it for a studio?
For most first moves, a two-person crew finishes in 2-3 hours — compare that to a rental truck, fuel, insurance, and a day of favors. Get the written quote and do the math with real numbers.
Do first apartments really require COIs?
Professionally managed buildings do, regardless of how small your move is. It's free from us either way.
When is the cheapest time to move?
Mid-month, midweek, morning. End-of-month and weekends carry the demand premium everywhere in San Diego.
